A few words from our tutor on what you can expect from this course

Course Description

• VAT for Contractors, Subcontractors & Developers • Invoicing & VAT Returns • Avoid Costly Mistakes

The Irish construction industry operates under some of the most complex VAT rules in the tax system. From domestic reverse charge VAT and Relevant Contracts Tax (RCT) to property transactions, international services and Revenue compliance obligations, businesses operating in the construction sector face a wide range of VAT challenges and risks. Incorrect treatment can lead to assessments, penalties, interest charges and costly disputes with Revenue.

This practical one-day course has been specifically designed for contractors, subcontractors, developers and finance professionals working within the construction sector. Through practical examples, worked scenarios and real-life case studies, attendees will gain a clear understanding of how Irish VAT rules apply to construction activities and how to manage their VAT obligations with confidence.

The course focuses on the issues most frequently encountered by construction businesses, including the domestic reverse charge, VAT on construction contracts, RCT interactions, VAT return completion, property-related transactions and international trading issues. Particular emphasis will be placed on common Revenue audit findings and practical measures that businesses can implement to minimise VAT risk and improve compliance.

By the end of this course attendees will be able to:

  • Understand the key VAT principles applicable to construction activities in Ireland
  • Distinguish between Relevant Contracts Tax (RCT) obligations and VAT obligations
  • Determine when domestic reverse charge VAT applies and correctly account for it in practice
  • Identify the correct VAT treatment of stage payments, retentions, variations and supply-and-install arrangements
  • Prepare and review invoices to ensure compliance with Irish VAT requirements
  • Complete VAT returns correctly for common construction transactions
  • Recognise VAT implications arising from property transactions and development activities
